This is a big week for community involvement! Beyond the obvious reason for attending community forums…. learning about an issue or what’s going on, meeting your neighbors in person again is a real plus. When we can put faces to names, when we can meet n ew people, when we can listen with interest, we start to weave together the fabric of community again.  And you know what that leads to…conversations with now familiar faces at Raley’s! • Incline High School Expansion grant community forum. Nowhere has the generosity of the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation been felt more than at Incline High School, at least in Incline Village. This latest grant builds out a football and track field, as well as expansion to the building itself to allow for more student programs. This is a broad-brush explanation of an extensive $38 million development. Thank you to Dave & Cheryl Duffield! 
• IVGID Board of Trustees meeting…there are two this month, tonight and October 20.
• UNR’s Great Conversations “Why We Make” presented by Rick Parsons, Teaching Professor of Art, at the Holman Art Center. UNR at Lake Tahoe is working hard to engage with our community. Rick is a longtime professor. The Holman Art Center is truly a great resource for local artists and people who enjoy art.

IVGID CANDIDATE FORUM ON THURSDAY!

Now’s your chance to find out where the candidates stand on all the issues at IVGID! Being an IVGID trustee must often seem like a thankless task. I am so glad OTHERS are willing to do this. The least we can do is vote for the candidates that best represent our point of view. And then trust them to do their job! Do your homework: go online to research the candidates and then come to the candidate forum at the Chateau Thursday (6:00 p.m.). Many of us are reeling from the seemingly abrupt decision by the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation to withdraw the funding support for the IVGID Rec Center Expansion last week. If one reads the Community 1^st account of the overall positive support from the IVGID board from the beginning last January, it seems odd that the DCD Foundation asked for a unanimous vote by the IVGID Board of Trustees. In reality, it was a perfect storm of the culture in our community that prevents redevelopment and expansion projects to be built. It is one of the reasons that caused me and others to re-form and start the IVCBA nearly two years ago. 

Although IVCBA tries to remain politically neutral, our tagline “Building Community” reflects our vision of a thriving community that supports and is supported by our agencies, businesses, nonprofits, and residents. Building the expansion to the Rec Center is certainly something that benefits our community. What lessons can be learned from this experience?

1. MORE COMMUNICATION would have helped allay the fears of those wondering if our largest local benefactor had our community’s best interests at heart. This project, like the TTD mobility bus hub, suffered from a lack of community input early on with the goal of garnering local support. 
2. LESS MICROMANAGEMENT of the IVGID staff and board would have allowed them to do their job better. IMO, the intense oversight given every decision, not just major projects, speaks to too much personal self-interest and a lack of respect for the staff. It is seen on the resident level communications to the board and from the board to the IVGID staff. Sometimes perfect can be the enemy of “good enough”.
3. Paying attention to THE GREATER GOOD of the community by everyone might have resulted in a project ready to move forward. The bigger picture shows that everyone would benefit from such an expansion…not just teens and that plans made several years ago might need to reflect the current proposal and community needs. Political motivations need to be set aside.
4. DON’T LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH. Can we all agree that a rec center expansion with a price tag of $26 million seems unattainable without a benefactor? And that we can all relate to the need for budget control? As much fun as it is “spending other people’s money”, at some point, we need to acknowledge that it is due to the largesse of the donor who absolutely has the final say on the size of the donation. 
5. GET INVOLVED in community affairs. I am always looking for the positive in a situation, and in this case, it is that we heard from more people and have people talking about the issue. Sometimes it seems that only negative comments get made and that people who speak up are mostly those against a project. I still believe that ALL sides care deeply about our community. Let’s not wait until after decisions are made to voice support or to respectfully disagree.
6. ATTEND MEETINGS…the IVGID Candidate Forum on Thursday, October 13, at 6 p.m. at the Chateau is sponsored by the IVCB (Friday) Community Forum and IVCBA. Submit your questions to ivcbforum@gmail.com before October 7. Over 160 people attended the last Inclined to Meet community program presentation on the proposed City of Incline Village.

1. VOTE! There’s an election coming up. Democracy works best when everyone participates.

Homecoming week at incline high school! Yes, homecoming games are well-attended by locals, so don’t miss this Friday night’s game at 7 p.m. The Highlanders are playing Reno’s Coral Academy. Not a football fan? Then come to see Incline High School royalty get crowned! Oh, and the snack shack will be open and run by the soccer team and will feature some delicious Mexican options. While you are on that field behind the high school, imagine what it will look like when improvements are made with the help of our local benefactor, the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation.

If you really can’t make the game, watch the parade at 2 p.m. The homecoming parade is another great tradition. It begins on Alder, follows Northwood and winds up on Tahoe Blvd and the Raleys parking lot before it heads up Village back to the high school. The theme this year is Board Games, so students have been dressing up in “game appropriate attire” representing Jumanji, Clue, Cards, Candy Land, or Battleship. Each grade will have a float that relates to the “board game” theme. For example: the Freshman will represent the game Jumanji, Sophomores are the game Clue, Juniors are playing cards and Seniors will represent Candyland. (Parade Route Map)

Inclined to Meet Town Hall on the City of Incline Village I normally don’t write about things that have already happened, but I want to mention this one. This Town Hall was sponsored by IVCBA and the IVCB Community Forum.It was attended by well over 150 people who listened respectfully to speakers Todd Lowe and Kevin Lyons talk about the movement to form the City of Incline Village. It is a long process involving much research and work by local citizens and professionals. This Town Hall is one of many steps being taken to inform the community so that a petition can be passed next year, allowing us to formally bring the matter to the community for a ballot vote. Although IVCBA does not take a political stance, we ARE in favor of information and dialogue! There are many opinions; I observe that the common denominator is that all share a deep love for our community. 

Destination management Travel North Tahoe Nevada (formerly the Visitor Bureau) is one of many Tahoe Basin tourism agencies concerned about sustaining our beautiful lake and mountains. They are part of the Tahoe Stewardship Council. Learn more at stewardshiptahoe.org.  TAKE THEIR SURVEY and give your opinions on the subject!

Sheriff’s picnic on October 8 I am going to keep promoting this event because it is such a classic small town event. Put it on your calendar now…more details in next week’s Local Lens!

CITY OF INCLINE VILLAGE TOWN HALL ON SEPTEMBER 29^th Perhaps you have heard there is a movement afoot to become a city. IVCBA’s Inclined to Meet along with IV/CB Community Forum, is hosting a Town Hall with a presentation by Todd Lowe and Kevin Lyons. Todd is the President of the Village League to Save Incline Assets, the organization that filed lawsuits to help our residents recover unfairly assessed taxes. TALKS@TAHOE UNR at Lake Tahoe is bringing a speaker series to Incline Village. It has its roots in the Great Conversations Speaker Series that has brought the scholarship of accomplished faculty from UNR’s College of Liberal Arts for the last 17 years. The first one brings Dr. Sudeep Chandra to speak on “My Lake Tahoe: Science Actions to Conserve Nature and Economy”. This event is on Wednesday, September 28, 5 p.m. at Prim Library. Free tickets are available on Eventbrite.

TAHOE TALKS at INCLINE VILLAGE LIBRARY Don’t be confused by the similarity in name with UNR at Lake Tahoe’s speaker series! The Incline Village Library is relaunching its roundtable discussion programs. Tahoe Talks features a timely topic with guest experts. The goal of the program is to share first-hand information and experience with fellow community members in a non-charged setting. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 11 for the program on Homelessness in the Tahoe Basin.

AHA Moments…TAHOE FORUM on Friday! We have a rare opportunity to listen to entrepreneur extraordinaire Sir Richard Branson and marine artist and conservationist Guy Harvey at AHA moments at UNR at Lake Tahoe Friday at 2 p.m. These two speakers represent the best of the higher education institution housed in Incline Village: arts, environment, and entrepreneurship. Formerly Sierra Nevada College/University and now UNR at Lake Tahoe, is carrying out the vision of Nancy Siebens Binz for a community event that would bring extraordinary people to Incline Village for the education of all. Ms. Binz is an important benefactor of Sierra Nevada College, working tirelessly to bring private higher education to our community. She herself was instrumental in bringing such people as Madame Sadat from Egypt, Steve Jobs, and Maye Musk, to Incline over the years. Learn more in our Tahoe Forum UNR Reno at Lake Tahoe community profile.

FIRE DANGER AND SMOKE

We were so fortunate to have July and August free of smoke, it was easy to forget that the fire season is usually in the fall. We run the risk of canceled events due to smoke, but hopefully not be any serious risk to our homes. My heart goes out to those suffering loss in the Mosquito fire area along with myriad other fires. That potential risk is wreaking havoc with many of us in Incline Village and Crystal Bay regarding fire insurance. The cost of insurance and cancelation of policies is affecting many residents. Parasol Tahoe initiated action through its Tahoe Communities Fire Forum in June, bringing together the two Tahoe Nevada fire chiefs, Menath Insurance, and other agencies. Please take Parasol’s fire insurance survey if you have not done so already. Think about donating to their Tahoe Fire Safe Fund! Mike Menath (IVCBA founding member) is working with the Department of Insurance to resolve some of the issues at the state level, as well as come up with alternative policies for their clients. State Farm (IVCBA Local Business member) is still able to write their “all-peril” policies in Nevada and is working with other insurance agencies in Incline Village. We look to Parasol Tahoe to update us soon on this communitywide initiative. 

TAHOE JANE BIZBUZ MIXER was a success!

OK, I don’t usually talk about things afterward, BUT this IVCBA mixer last night was such a success, watch for the next one! Meet other locals, support a business, and hear about a local issue. What a great combination! Thank you to Nellie, Jonas, and the staff at Tahoe Jane.

NEVADA JANE…Who? Whaaat? Gus’ Open Pit Barbecue in the Raley’s Center is getting a new brand and vibe with the name of Nevada Jane! They are hosting the first IVCBA BizBuz Mixer next Tuesday, September 13 from 5-7p.m. Come and enjoy samples of their Latin street food inspired cuisine and a specialty cocktail. Citizen Advisory Board (CAB) Update

Once a month, Washoe County holds meetings to update each local community on projects and relevant subjects. It is an effort to keep us connected and give us a voice. Incline Village Crystal Bay citizens can go through a simple process to become a member of the CAB. It is run by a very capable woman, Diane Becker, and a number of other dedicated, concerned citizens. They do their homework and give thoughtful, insightful feedback to the County. Can I just say how much I admire this group? Thank you, CAB members, for your service!

Last night’s CAB meeting agenda had two major items. Washoe County Manager Eric Brown was seeking feedback on the CAB process and how to improve communications, particularly on development projects with our community. The second major item was a presentation of recommendations from the County’s Washoe Tahoe Transportation Study. Not the mobility hub. Traffic lights, mixed-use trails, things that affect how walkable, bikeable, and safe our streets are. Mark your calendar for October 4 for the community summit on this subject. Learn more about the CAB.

• Trails and Vistas has its annual Art Hike up in Sheep Flats on Saturday and Sunday. If you don’t have tickets, you might just be able to get them, if you act fast. But they do this every year at this time. Even I can commune with nature if I have talented artists sharing their work along the way.
• There’s a new nonprofit in town, the Village Pet Foundation! Its goal is to raise funds for veterinarian care for pets in need. The Village Pet Fair is their first fundraiser, this Saturday, September 10 at Preston Field. It’s a community yard sale and lots of activities for pets and owners. Bring your dog! Or take one home from a shelter!
• TOCCATA performs its annual “Remembrance” concert ON Sunday, 9-11. It’s a great way to remember and reflect back on the attack on the Twin Towers in 2001.
• Tuesday, September 13: Republican Women’s Fun with Fashion Show luncheon at the Chateau. They do this every year under the direction of Joanellen Slocumb. Proceeds go to their scholarship fund.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND means the Village Ski Loft is having its giant sale! It used to be a big tent in the lower parking lot, but this year it will be smaller tents in their own upper parking lot. Same great deals! In the lower parking lot, the Pet Station has a fun fundraiser. It’s a Doggie Wash! Instead of getting your car washed, bring your dog! It benefits local animal shelters like Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation. Don’t have a dog? WARF will have a few on hand that need adopting. There’s a doggie food drive that day. Not to worry if you forget. Great deals on pet food and other supplies inside the Pet Station too! The place to be Labor Day Weekend…800 Tahoe Blvd., on the corner with Northwood. 

The ROTARY DUCK DROP has become an annual Labor Day tradition. Remember when you bought those ducks outside of Raleys on the 4^th of July weekend? They are going for a ride, from the top of the fire engine ladder, on Monday, September 5 at the Village Green from 9-10:30 a.m. (You can still purchase ducks at Incline Cleaners!)

Summer winding down usually means good deals for the locals. The Sierra Cloud has specials, especially if you can get a group together to listen to Mr. Tahoe, Darin Talbot one last time. The end of summer means the concerts on Incline Beach are about over. Thank you, Incline Spirits! The last Wednesday concert is tonight and there are just two more Friday nights left. Getting to one of those concerts is still on my summer bucket list. I better get there this week!

The opening of school is old news, but the back-to-school nights are all coming up in a week. If you are a parent, don’t miss it! Check with your school for the exact day and time. 

What is NEW news, is that the St. Clare Montessori School moved to Incline from Tahoe Vista! Its 35 pre-K – 8^th grade students are housed in St. Francis of Assis Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Episcopalian Church. By the way, the Village Church has its Christian Pre-school with beloved teacher Cindy Ligget as well as a “pod” for older students. I love the way our faith-based communities are partnering on education!

An ECONOMIC SUMMIT called Envision Tahoe is an annual event hosted by regional agency Tahoe Prosperity Center. This is one of those gatherings where business and community leaders meet to discuss the common issues that face everyone: how to diversify the economy, maintain (and house!) our workforce. We all share the common goal of transitioning the tourism industry to destination management and sustainability to better care for the Lake and the environment. Register for Envision Tahoe on September 7 at Granlibakken at tahoeprosperity.org.

THANK YOU, PARASOL TAHOE, for awarding $250,000 to local charities! Many of them are housed right here in Incline Village.

REVITALIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT I hope you have all noticed the growth and new activity around our communities. The IVCBA vision is one of thriving communities and this usually means improvements in our infrastructure and buildings. Washoe County and its Transportation Study, with action plans soon to be recommended, will set the stage for redevelopment and revitalization activity. IVCBA is organizing a Main Street program, along with Washoe County and IVGID, to help with planning. We have seen active projects around town, most noticeably the Natural Grocer construction site on Tahoe Blvd.  This week, the new owners of the Biltmore are unveiling their revitalization plans with the community through a series of small group meetings. They have been very well received. The Nine 47 condominium project is undergoing hearings and the approval process. Although I hear the outcry about the desire for workforce housing, these two projects represent a need (IMO, new housing is needed at all income levels) and an investment in the future of our community.  Workforce Housing must start with Washoe County because it is not feasible under the current economic conditions. These kinds of questions and lack of local decision-making have led to the latest attempt at governance, the City of Incline. Watch for upcoming petitions to get this question on a ballot, the first step in having meaningful conversations about what having our own City would mean. Information at cityofinclinevillage.com. BACK TO SCHOOL ALREADY?  Yep. Watch your speed in the school zones.  Our schools have an amazing staff, beginning with the principals, Tierney Cahill at Incline High School, Kari Michael at Incline Middle School, John Stern at Incline Elementary, and Headmaster Bob Graves at the Lake Tahoe School. 

The schools get lots of support from our community. The Incline Village Realtors Stuff The Bus every August with school supplies for each school. Incline Education Fund collaborated with AAUW to fund the UNR Dean’s Future Scholars mentorship program this summer (it’s a camp for Incline Middle School students to help them succeed in school and prepare them for college). And watch for exciting news on all IEF’s literacy projects this year. The first effort is a collaborative one with both local Rotary groups to revamp the Incline Middle School library. 

I want to give a big shout-out to former principal Leslie Hermann and powerhouse Denise Menzies. They both give freely of their time getting “first generation” high school students into college. Leslie founded and runs the Boys and Girls Club Boot Camp to help incoming seniors write their essay and other essentials for those college apps. 

MORE SUMMER FUNDRAISERS

Two events at stunning lakefront estates on Sunday, August 28 support our students. AAUW’s garden party at the “Oasis” raises money for their annual scholarship fund. AAUW also has an online silent auction throughout August. Diamond Peak Ski Education Foundation’s Après’ Après’ is an all-out, full-on fundraiser, complete with dinner, music, and an auction. This is a first-time event! If you missed out on the tickets (Darolyn, I will come begging this week, hoping there’s a cancellation), donate to DPSEF online. 

THE BEACHES

Back to school means the beaches are less crowded. If you have been avoiding them due to all those social media complaints about crowds, time to check them out again! Mid-week, of course. I spent a delightful afternoon swimming at Incline Beach yesterday. Plenty of parking. My choice of picnic tables was one in the shade! Even for a Minnesotan like me, that water is cold (but not really). It felt so refreshing! Did I mention how well the IVGID beaches are maintained, under the leadership of Sheila Leijon and Steve Phillips and his grounds crew? They are the unsung heroes of IVGID Parks and Recreation. They are low profile and so competent.

HEART OF GOLD…I’m not talking about the many wonderful philanthropists in Incline. I’m talking about the amazing melons from Fallon. They can ONLY be found at the Farmers Market in Incline Village.  Despite school starting this week, summer is not over! The Farmer’s Market is still open every Thursday in the Incline Library parking lot on Alder. It’s the next best thing to Village Market that used to be in Village Center. Owner Ron Stanger always carried those HOG melons, heirloom tomatoes, and fresh berries, the flavors of summer. The Farmer’s Market is also a great source of seafood from Alaska and meats from Nevada farms. And yes, we miss Village Meats and Eric and Danielle Halstead especially in the summertime.

TAHOE FOOD HUB keeps that farmer’s market vibe going all year long. This is a very entrepreneurial nonprofit, working and educating farmers and the public on best practices to renew our land. NEVADA JANE: GUS’ BBQ has a new name and concept. It’s a “Tahoe Eatery”!

LET’S TALK TURKEY…says Sierra Community House. They need donations NOW in order to supply an estimated 700 turkeys at Thanksgiving. They are one of many local nonprofits that need your help earlier this year. Rotary has a Food Drive for the Gospel Mission: drop off non-perishables at the Rec Center lobby.  August is a time for FUN and fundraising with Tahoe Family Solutions…Shabby Chic on August 23 and PEO’s Taste of Incline on August 25.  I’m probably forgetting something, so check the calendar, regularly, at IVCBA.org!

MY SUMMER VACATION… in Minnesota was great. Lots of family, lots of hot humid weather. Glad to be back in Incline! Even I am having trouble keeping up with all the nonprofit and cultural events. The 2022 Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor is still going strong. DON’T miss the Monday night concert series at Sand Harbor. Yes, I do have FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). I am probably the only one who is missing the Queen concert on the 15^th because I forgot to get tickets on time. Yikes!

• Renting a boat from Action Water Sports to have brunch at Garwoods
• Golfing too! 

Looking for a place to walk without the hassle of parking at the East Shore Trail? Try the Earth Walk, thanks to Jacquie Chandler of Sustainable Tahoe. The Earth Walk starts behind the Visitor Center (check out the Washoe shelter that looks like a tepee first)  through the forest that loops around the IVGID Tennis Center. And who knew they have a gazillion tennis courts back there, for Pickle Ball too!  Did I mention the frisbee golf course that goes through this beautiful part of our Village? The bicycle pump park and the bocce ball court by the Rec Center are good reasons to park at the Rec Center and just stay outside. 

DID YOU KNOW there’s a magic show at the Hyatt? Alex Ramon, from Magic Castle in LA, has a show on Saturdays at 6pm. It’s a teaser for his late show at Harrah’s where he has the venue to really show off his talent.

NEIGHBORHOOD MEETINGS: IVGID is holding a series of meetings around proposed projects such as the effluent storage tank, the dog park, bike park, and the Rec Center expansion on August 16. IVGID does have calendars on their website, so does IVCBA. But if it’s community meetings you are looking for, go to IVCB Community 1^st website. They have a definitive list of meetings related to government and agencies.
