Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino, a spacious resort nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and on the shore of Lake Tahoe, raised $10,000 for the Incline Education Fund’s (IEF) “Step up for STEM” program. The money was raised through the resort’s haunted carnival fundraising event that took place on Halloween.

Through community support and awarded grants, the IEF has resulted in several educational programs including a makerspace at Incline Elementary School, a robotics program at Incline Middle School, and an engineering and entrepreneurship program at Incline High School. In addition to the donation to IEF, the resort also raised more than $2,500 for Tahoe Family Solutions, a non-profit organization that offers an array of community-based services including education, mental health services, and youth development programs. Parents, teachers, students, and members of the Incline Village community filed into the Incline Elementary School gymnasium last Thursday, December 19th, to cheer on the kids taking part in the third annual Robot Parade.

The parade route wrapped around the gym like a track as classes donning holiday sweaters and headbands (related to their robot theme) sat eagerly at the start, ready to show off their robot “floats” to their loved ones in the hour-long ceremony.

The idea of the Robot Parade came from IES teacher Trina Kleinhenz who teaches a STEM-style curriculum out of a room called the Makerspace. Her lessons involve project-based learning, teambuilding, and hands-on self-directed activities. This includes teaching computer science and coding to grades as early as kindergarten up to the 5th grade robotics club.

University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe campus touches students, artists, community — and the world

Two years after its acquisition, the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe campus continues significant strides to strengthen its role as a vibrant pillar of the University and an engaged educational partner in the Tahoe community.

From creation of the world-class Tahoe Institute for Global Sustainability to specialized short-term classes on subjects ranging from geology to creative writing, the Lake Tahoe campus hosts a growing number of initiatives that support its focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship.

“We are excited about the substantial progress that we have made in our transition,” said Jeff Thompson, executive vice president and provost of the University. “We are successfully using this beautiful campus in many ways that benefit students, the local community and the global environment.”

The 18-acre Lake Tahoe Wayne L. Prim campus in Incline Village was acquired by the University on July 1, 2022. The campus, previously the home of Sierra Nevada University, is nestled in pines less than a mile from the shore of Lake Tahoe.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – For two years, the walls of the Tahoe Environmental Research Center’s (TERC) longue has been graced with a colorful mural displaying the wildlife, seasons, and activities of Lake Tahoe. But since the sublease between the University of California, Davis, and the University of Nevada, Reno wasn’t renewed for the room, UNR will decide what the fate of the lounge—and its mural—will be.

In 2018, when TERC was still part of Sierra Nevada University, plans were made to create an exhibit that would deepen the understanding of Lake Tahoe’s aquatic ecosystem. TERC Director of Education and Outreach Heather Segale worked to secure grants from Parasol Community Foundation, Rotary Club of Incline Village, Tahoe Maritime Foundation, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, and a national organization called the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences.

These funds would go to produce the mural and the interactive augmented reality components designed alongside it. Segale chose Susie Alexander, a local artist who had painted murals at locations like the Sierra Boat Company, Kings Beach, Blue Agave, and a Donner Party Museum. “Heather Segale was very instrumental in making this mural happen,” said Alexander.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – Incline Education Fund (IEF) has exceeded the $1 million mark as it heads into the new year. 

“It’s well over $500,000,” said Executive Director Mary Danahey after tallying its donations and grants. “Plus the $600,000 endowment.” 

In June 2019, IEF started as a fiscal project under the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation. The foundation is a leader on regional issues and a catalyst for non-profit collaboration at Lake Tahoe.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – Incline High School stands out for having almost all its students cross the stage to graduate in 2024. 

“I am encouraged by last year’s graduation rate of 98.67%, which reflects the hard work and commitment of our students, families, and staff,” said Incline High Principal Tierney Cahill. “However, I remain mindful that the remaining 1.33% represents more than just a statistic, it represents individual stories, often shaped by complex challenges such as relocation or personal circumstances.” 

Incline High had 98.67% graduation rate for 2023-2024 school year, a 3.32% increase over the previous year, according to newly released Washoe County School District (WCSD) statistics.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Community members, volunteers, and docents are invited to come together for a special farewell celebration for the beloved UC Davis Underwater Lake Tahoe Lounge, an immersive space at the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center created to give visitors a unique, in-depth view of the diverse life beneath the surface of Lake Tahoe. This gathering will be held on December 13, 2024, from 4-6 p.m. at the Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, allowing the community to say goodbye before the exhibit closes.

“We are hosting this event to memorialize the “Underwater Lake Tahoe Exhibit” and the beautiful work and effort of muralist Susie Alexander,” says Heather Segale, Director of Education and Outreach for UC Davis TERC.

The Underwater Lake Tahoe Lounge was conceived in 2018 and created in partnership with Sierra Nevada University (SNU) and UC Davis in response to visitor requests for a deeper understanding of Lake Tahoe’s aquatic ecosystem.

The Incline High football team is heading to their first state championship game since 1981.  The Highlanders won an incredibly tough state semi final game last Saturday down in Needles, CA.  Incline is the #2 seed in northern NV so they traveled to the border of NV, CA and AZ to play against the #1 seeded Needles Mustangs.  They defeated the Mustangs 12-8 in a hard defensive battle.  Senior Quarterback Tommy Williams ran for 2 touchdowns and the Highlander defense held Needles to one touchdown.

Now, Incline is trying to win their first State Title since 1973 on Saturday November 23 at 10am at McQueen High School.  The Highlanders will play undefeated league rival Pershing County.  Both Incline and Pershing County are both undefeated because they didn’t get to play each other this season due to the Davis Fire in September.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – With their entire roster returning and the taste of Nevada 2A division State Championship victory still fresh, the Incline High School (IHS) Girls Golf Team has their sights set on building a dynasty. 

“You just got to show up and play and see what happens,” said Coach Sam Canino, who has led the team for two years. “Coming up next for the team, hopefully all the girls play golf over the intervening months and maybe even recruit one or two more players and come back next year even stronger looking to establish a dynasty.” 

The journey began with an unexpected challenge of finding enough players to field a complete team.
